Variable DC power supplies are AC to DC power supplies with a variable DC output. The output can be varied with a Variable Transformer, also known as variac, and the transformer can be adjusted manually or with a motorized control. An AC input power can be single phase or three phases; with a single phase AC input, the DC output ripple is very high (50%) and with a three phase AC input, the DC output ripple is low (5%). This would be a key benefit for selecting three phase AC input instead of single phase.
Variable Transformer Controlled units are more expensive, but the ripple on the output remains unchanged at 5% levels as output is lowered from the maximum. Most variable DC power supplies are custom built and units can be an open frame or enclosed inside an enclosure. In addition, input/output protections, output voltage, and current meters can be provided per customer requirements. Units can be PLC controlled or Manual Potentiometer Controlled.
